Effective Studying

Welcome to this module, designed to support a smooth transition into your university studies.
You’ll find a six-part series of self-guided sessions, each taking about 70 minutes to complete. While you’re free to work through them independently, we recommend teaming up with a small group of 2 to 6 peers to enhance discussion and reflection. To get the most out of the content, try spacing the sessions one week apart and rotating the “instructor” role (while still being part of the exercises) within your group to keep momentum and engagement high.

Session 1

Here, the connection between personal values and study habits is introduced to build motivation. You’ll gather past approaches, set meaningful goals, and learn how active recall can improve your memory. (70 Minutes)

Session 2

In this session, you’ll build on studying techniques by learning when and how to study most effectively. You’ll explore spaced repetition, practice focus-boosting strategies like active reading and Pomodoro, and set long-term plans to stay consistent and engaged throughout the semester. (70 minutes)

Session 3

This session focuses on organizing your study time and structuring your learning for long-term success. You’ll assess how you currently use your time, apply SMART goal-setting, and learn how chunking can improve memory and make complex material more manageable. (70 minutes)

Session 4

Session four provides material that facilitates learning through elaboration (asking “why” and “how” questions), concept mapping, and interleaving different subjects to improve retention. You’ll also learn how sleep and your natural energy patterns (chronotypes) impact memory, and set a goal to apply one or more of these strategies in your next study session. (70 minutes)

Session 5

In this session, you’ll begin keeping a self-efficacy journal to build confidence by tracking your academic wins, especially through small, achievable challenges. You’ll also explore dual coding (combining visual and auditory inputs) and test which learning method works best for you through comparison and reflection. (80 minutes)

Session 6

The last session focuses on exam preparation by teaching pre-instatement techniques to improve memory recall, reviewing challenging course concepts through peer discussion and concrete examples, and reinforcing learning with a Kahoot quiz and self-efficacy journaling for confidence and effectiveness. (70 minutes)
